Today, Houzz is the #1 international platform for home remodeling. During the next several years, they raised more than $613 million while continually improving their platform. The next steps of Houzz development were expanding internationally, and attracting new investors. It became insanely popular among designers who now could forget about paper-printed project presentations - all their ideas could be stored and displayed to clients through the Houzz app. This allowed them to launch an app for the iPad. Thus, after a year and a half of bootstrapping, the newborn entrepreneurs dared to ask for help from investors. Houzz already needed 20 servers to store the images of the design projects. The platform required technical expertise and an infusion of capital. Soon, however, the site drew the attention of many designers and architects who wanted to promote their services and design ideas.īy the end of 2009, Adi and Alon realized that their project was scaling up so fast that they could not treat it as a side project anymore. They started with only 20 users, mostly their acquaintances from the Bay Area. In his free time Alon, who at that time worked as an engineer at eBay, coded the Houzz website, while Adi was in charge of the content. The name ‘Houzz’ originated from a combination of two words ‘House’ and ‘Buzz.’ Adi and Alon aimed to put an end to the chaotic search for design solutions and bring homeowners, design creators, and merchants to one place where they could collaborate. Desperately trying to find design ideas for their house in magazines that would accommodate a budget of $2000, they accidentally discovered an untapped niche for a startup. In 2009, two Israeli immigrants, Adi Tatarko and her husband Alon Cohen decided to renovate a ranch they just bought in Palo Alto, California. Many startups were born out of the personal need of their founders. Ready to jump in? History of Houzz: How a Side Project Turned into a Multi-Million Dollar Business Architectural Digest If you are interested in using the Houzz business model to create a similar app for another niche or a country where Houzz is not present, this article is a perfect guideline for you. One of the most popular in this sphere is Houzz. ![]() Not to mention that even before the pandemic the online platforms for home renovation flourished. Like several other helmets, the original was found in the River Rhine at Mainz, including one with the inscription of a soldier named L. This helmet dates to the same period as the Imperial Gallic H, and is essentially the same design, but is made in the cupric alloy " orichalcum" (brass) instead of iron. However, as both styles of neck guard were clearly used side by side, it was likely a matter of personal preference and/or armoury issue of what type could be worn by a particular Roman soldier. Other datable helmets indicate a trend toward these more sloping neck guards in the last half of the 1st century, which continued through the 2nd and 3rd centuries. The most complete example of this type is from Lech, near Augsburg, Germany. This helmet is similar in design to the Gallic G, but features a different style of eyebrows and a more sloping neck guard. The Weisenau example's brass rosettes resemble those found on the lorica segmentata in the Corbridge hoard. ![]() Fragments of helmets of this style were found in rubbish pits at Colchester (now reassembled and displayed at the Colchester Castle Museum) and so can definitely be dated to the Boudican revolt of AD 61, though they lack the Weisenau example's carrying handle, which probably makes the Weisenau one later. The best example was found in the Rhine River at Mainz-Weisenau and is now exhibited in Worms. Robinson considered this the "typical mid-first century legionary helmet" (although the Coolus/Montefortino was probably more common) and it seems to have continued in use on into the early 2nd century AD. ![]() Imperial Gallic helmets Imperial Gallic G AD 125 through the latter 3rd century AD. This started as a field modification, as seen on several Imperial Gallic helmets with the crossbars hastily riveted right over the decorative eyebrows (crossbars are seen on some, though not all, of the legionary helmets on Trajan's Column), but quickly became a standard feature, found on all helmets produced from ca. The Roman combat experience of the Dacian wars produced further developments in helmet design, particularly the two iron bars riveted crosswise across the helmet skull (alternatively, two thick bronze strips might be riveted to the top of a bronze legionary or auxiliary helmet) it has been suggested that this form of reinforcement was added as protection against the falx. These differences in decoration and workmanship tended to diminish as time went on the last two Italic types classified by Robinson, the Hebron (Italic G) and Niedermörmter (Italic H) helmets, were as carefully crafted and well-decorated as any Imperial Gallic helmet.Īlthough derived from a Celtic original, the Imperial helmet had more advanced features, such as a sloped neck guard with ribbing at the nape, projecting ear guards, brass trim, and decorative bosses. They drew these names from their main manufacturers, rather than wearers – Robinson believed "Imperial Gallic" helmets (featuring a pair of distinctive embossed eyebrows on the forehead region and tending to be carefully made and elaborately decorated) were the products of Celtic craftsmen in Gaul whereas "Imperial Italic" helmets (lacking the eyebrows and somewhat more roughly made) were the product of less-skilled copycats in Italy and elsewhere in the Empire. Russell Robinson, who further sub-divided this main type into the two sub-types of "Imperial Gallic" and "Imperial Italic". The term Imperial helmet was coined by H. This constituted the final evolutionary stage of the legionary helmet ( galea). So when the improved Imperial helmet appeared, it replaced what remained of the very old Coolus type, which was largely superseded at the time by improved versions of the Montefortino helmet type, which continued to serve alongside it for a time. Even as the professional Imperial army emerged, and short-term service citizen soldiers became rare, useful equipment was never discarded. Thus, a variety of equipment, from different eras was present in the ranks. Prior to the Empire, Roman Republican soldiers often provided their own equipment, which was passed down from father to son. The Imperial helmet-type was a type of helmet worn by Roman legionaries. 11/5/2023 0 Comments Plastic wine decanter![]() ![]() Material: Stainless steel | Color: Copper finish | Dishwasher Safe: No | Product Dimensions (LxWxH): 1.75 x 1.5 x 4.5 inches Also, this aerator should be hand washed. So, it's worth noting that if you’re planning on drinking any unfiltered wines or older wines that might have some sediment, you’ll want to consider a decanter set, a dispenser-style aerator, or another option with a filter feature. This particular method of aeration is perfect for younger reds, in particular, which may or may not be a limiting factor to consider depending on your drinking preferences. The polished copper finish also makes this aerating wine pourer look and feel much more expensive than you’d expect, given the affordable price. This simple yet effective system offers approximately the same level of aeration as an hour to an hour and a half of decantation (plus, it minimizes drips). We considered factors such as ease of use, care, and the different available types of aerators-in addition to important aspects such as performance.Ī budget-friendly, no-frills aerator, the Summit Aerating Pour Spout from Viski uses an “air-blending helix” to maximize a wine’s contact with oxygen as it passes through the spout and into your glass. Furthermore, he adds, there are some wines outside the red category that benefit from breathing, such as aromatic whites from Alsace and Burgundy or Txakoli wines from Basque Country.Īeration can be achieved through various methods, like using pourers, decanter sets, and other tools. But if you're opening a bottle in the moment spontaneously and you don't want to wait to decant, an aerator can be helpful. In those cases, the aeration happens by virtue of the decanting process. “The majority of the time, reds will be the wines you are aerating the most by either using time or expediting it with a decanter,” he says. This, in turn, improves its aroma and taste.Įxposure to air through aeration is vital when drinking wine, though it’s really only necessary for certain wines, according to Devin Kennedy, co-founder of Michael Lavelle Wine, a Black-owned private wine label. It's a small device you can add to a bottle or a decanter, for example, that helps the wine breathe.
